Exploring 2023’s Running Course Elevations

Each race brought its challenges and unforgettable moments. One aspect that particularly catches my attention is the elevation of each course—a factor that can significantly impact a runner’s experience.

In this blog post, I’ll take you on a visual journey through the elevation charts of some of the races I ran this year.

Padma Run Bandung 2023 (10K)

  • Location: Ciumbuleuit, Bandung
  • Date: 28 January 2023

Starting the year with the Padma Run in Bandung was an exciting kick-off. The 10K course, with its total ascent of 354.0 meters and total descent of 363.0 meters, threw a bit of a surprise at many runners due to its challenging elevation. The lowest point reached was 867.6 meters, and the highest point soared to 1,061.2 meters.

UI Half Marathon 2023 (10K)

  • Location: Universitas Indonesia, Depok
  • Date: 16 July 2023

Running the UI Half Marathon led me through a familiar course—my regular running spot where I train every week. The 10K course featured a total ascent of 64.0 meters and a total descent of 57.0 meters. The lowest point reached was 67.6 meters, and the highest point soared to 92.6 meters.

Pocari Sweat Run Indonesia 2023 (Full Marathon / 42K)

  • Location: Gedung Sate, Bandung
  • Date: 30 July 2023

Embarking on my first full marathon journey at the Pocari Sweat Run Indonesia was a monumental achievement. The 42K course featured a total ascent of 219.0 meters and a total descent of 207.0 meters. The lowest point reached was 704.6 meters, and the highest point soared to 780.8 meters.

Maybank Bali Marathon 2023 (Half Marathon / 21K)

  • Location: Gianyar, Bali
  • Date: 27 August 2023

Bali, with its breathtaking landscapes, provided the backdrop for the half marathon I ran. The 21K course featured a total ascent of 181.0 meters and a total descent of 173.0 meters. The lowest point reached was 17.0 meters, and the highest point soared to 137.4 meters.

Victoria Run 2023 (Half Marathon / 21K)

  • Location: QBIG, BSD
  • Date: 29 October 2023

The Victoria Run provides a relatively flat half-marathon course, making it an excellent opportunity to aim for a new personal best or record. The 21K course featured a total ascent of 37.0 meters and a total descent of 16.0 meters. The lowest point reached was 28.6 meters, and the highest point soared to 55.6 meters.

UI Ultra 2023 (1 Loop)

  • Location: Universitas Indonesia, Depok
  • Date: 17 December 2023

The UI Ultra race has different categories, and if you’re not up for a full 70K, there are relay options. You can team up with friends to finish the challenging 70K course together. The course itself (1 loop) featured a total ascent of 70 meters and a total descent of 71 meters. The lowest point reached was 59 meters, and the highest point soared to 86 meters.

To sum it up, every race had its ups and downs. I hope that sharing these elevation charts and details can serve as a valuable reference for fellow runners. Understanding the elevation of a course allows us to better prepare our bodies, avoiding shock on the terrain and enhancing the overall race experience.
